Conservatory Trivia - Who were the 27?
Why do we talk about "the 27?"
You may know by now that the
Conservatory of Flowers was originally purchased as a "kit" by
philanthropist James Lick, who meant to have it constructed on his
property in Santa Clara. He died before it could be built and a
powerful group of 27 businessmen purchased the Conservatory kit and paid to have it constructed in Golden Gate Park.
Who were the 27? In the months to
come, we will share information on our "founders" in a love for history
and also to evoke a more modern iteration of the next 27!
Alfred Lovering Tubbs made his fortune
in the rope business during the Gold Rush and traveled widely in Napa.
He purchased 254 acres of land just north of Calistoga in 1882 and
planted vines. By 1896 Chateau Montelena was the 7th largest
winery in Napa Valley!
See a short video about Alfred HERE on the Chateau Montelena website!
